Tower Bridge Sunrise

Tower Bridge Sunrise

This photograph of Tower Bridge in London was taken at sunrise in March 2009 from nearby London Bridge. The early start was rewarded with this stunning sunrise as a back drop to the illuminated Tower Bridge, HMS Belfast and the flowing River Thames. In the distance are the towers of Canary Wharf in the London Docklands. It was a great but cold photography outing. I arrived to an empty London Bridge but as the early morning light show began some keen City workers started to cross the River Thames, barely even looking up to admire the incredible scene. Back in 2009 I used to get to London Photography locations on my Piaggio Vespa...I particularly remember the journey being filled with excitement with the promising sky. Of course it was bitterly cold at that time of year.

Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London, England, over the River Thames. It is close to the Tower of London, which gives it its name. It has become an iconic symbol of London.

Tower Bridge is sometimes mistaken for London Bridge, the next bridge upstream. A popular urban legend is that in 1968, Robert McCulloch, the purchaser of the old London Bridge that was later shipped to Lake Havasu City, Arizona, believed that he was in fact buying Tower Bridge. This was denied by McCulloch himself and has been debunked by Ivan Luckin, the vendor of the bridge.
