Godrevy Lighthouse, Cornwall

Godrevy Lighthouse, Cornwall

This photograph of Godrevy Lighthouse in Cornwall was captured on stormy summer afternoon in 2011. Moments before the shafts of light showed themselves I was being bombarded by a downpour of hail stones.

Godrevy Lighthouse was built in 1858–1859. The Stones reef had always been a hazard to shipping and a lighthouse had been considered many times prior to 1858 but nothing came of plans until the SS Nile was wrecked in 1854 with the loss of all on board.

Godrevy headland is a wonderful place to observe the local wildlife. I was on the headland for only an hour and was lucky enough to see several Seals playing in the surf.
